(A round in the dark is a lot easier than you probably think. And it’s great fun. Learn more about this unique way to expand your disc golf options to all ours of the day.)
For those who haven’t played, disc golf in the dark can seem like a strange idea. But with the right equipment and know-how, it is easy to enjoy a round of disc golf on even the darkest of nights. In fact, the darker the better!
First off, start with the discs. A three-disc assortment including a putter, mid-range, and driver is usually plenty, although many serious glow golfers carry over a dozen discs. At DGX we offer many varieties of glow plastic, including a variety of models from Innova and Discraft. The Photon Glo line from Discraft is particularly sweet as the discs hold their initial “charge” for several hours (They can be charge on a car headlight in just a few minutes). The more traditional Innova glow discs (and some older Discraft molds which are still available) will require recharging on every hole. Portable black lights are ideal for glow-in-the-dark play. Wave one of these inexpensive units over your disc for a few seconds, and the disc will glow brightly. A good alternative is a portable flash unit (those built into most cameras are simply not bright enough, however). When using a flash, discs for several players can be placed on the ground and the group can be charged all at once. It is important to always warn others before setting the flash off – night vision is easily spoiled. Standard flashlights are not recommended as illuminating devices. They usually take too long to utilize and do not provide sufficient candlepower to achieve optimal glow.
Once you have discs and an illumination device, you’re ready to play. Finding glow discs is often easier than finding them during the day – since the glow really stands out in the darkness. Fellow players should watch as each player drives, to help in locating errant throws. Your ears are also important, as the sound of a disc as it lands (or hits a tree, or crashes through the bushes…) can provide clues on where to start your search. Players often carry a small flashlight (magnetic ones are particularly good) that can be placed on a basket once players approach the end of a hole. Alternately, a glowing disc that is not in use can be placed atop a basket to provide a target for putting. Keep safety in mind as you play and be sure others are not in your way as you prepare to throw.
One way or another, get out and get in a few rounds of glow disc golf. You’ll be glad you did.
